The Northwoods Riders OHV Club will be presenting an ATV Youth Safety Training Class on Sunday July 19, 2009 beginning at 1:00 PM. The testing and operating class will be held at Helga Township Hall. Turn east off 71 by Fugates store, go 2 miles on County Rd 9, to Helga Township Hall, on the right. Cost for the class is $18.00 which includes registration fee. Pre-registration is required.
ATV safety training is for ATV operators ages 12-15. Students who complete this course are able to operate ATVs of any size with these restrictions: you must "fit" the machine and you may make a direct crossing of a public road right of way or operate on state lands and waters, only when accompanied by a person 18 years of age or older who has a valid drivers license. Operating along or on a public road right of way is not permitted with this certification.. Students who are 11 years of age may take the complete course, but the certificate will only become valid when they reach their 12th birthday.
Course components
Independent study - CD ROM available free of charge through the DNR Information Center [(651) 296-6157 or (888) 646-6367] or the Enforcement Safety Training Office (1-800-366-8917). PLEASE NOTE: CD portion MUST be completed BEFORE the class date.
Testing & operating day - participate in a testing and operating day led by volunteer instructors.
Upon successfully completing the "testing & operating" portion of the course, the student will be issued a temporary certificate to operate an appropriate ATV over 90cc.. Instructors will submit class rosters to the DNR and completion certificates will be mailed directly to the successful student..
For those who have previously completed the old DNR ATV course (workbook and written test) and already possess an ATV safety certificate only the testing and operating component needs to be completed. The student must show the previous certificate to the instructor and pay the $18 fee. Upon successfully completing the second part of the new course (which consists of a written test and the driving and operational component) a new certificate which will allow operation of the larger ATVs will be issued.
To register or for further information please call: Cynthia Dudley 218-854-7456.
