1. DNR urges OHV users to check trail conditions; restrictions placed on ditch riding (March 25, 2008)
Warm weather is on the way and many off-highway vehicle (OHV) riders are anxious to hit the trails. But since state forest roads and trails are typically wet during the spring, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will temporarily close some areas.
"Motor vehicles can be hard on forest roads and trails in the spring," said Keith Simar, DNR State Forest Recreation Program coordinator. "The spring thaw produces soft soils which are susceptible to rutting. And under state law, no one can operate a motor vehicle or snowmobile on forest lands in a way that causes erosion or rutting," he said. The DNR will post signs at entry points and at parking lots in state forests.
Riders should check current trail/road conditions on the DNR Web site www.findthetrails.com or call the DNR Information Center at (651) 296-6157, or toll free at 1-888-MINNDNR (646-6367).
The DNR also reminds riders that state law prohibits ditch riding south of the agriculture line between April 1 and Aug. 1. The agriculture line runs roughly from Moorhead to Taylors Falls along Highway 10 and Highway 95. The purpose of this is to minimize disturbance of nesting birds and to protect the cover that ditches provide.
"We will lift road and trail closures as soon as possible," Simar said. "In turn, we ask users to check before riding and to ride responsibly."
2. Roads and trails in six state forests to be closed during spring thaw (March 25, 2008)
The Minnesota Department of Natural
Resources (DNR) will temporarily close
all forest roads and trails to motorized traffic in Paul Bunyan, Two Inlets,
Smoky Hills, Badoura, Huntersville and Lyons state forests during the spring
thaw.
"Every spring these areas are closed to motorized vehicle use for a short period of time to protect the roads and trails from damage while the frost leaves the ground," said Terry Novak, DNR program forester. "We are watching the road conditions daily and anticipate the closures sometime around March 26."
Closed roads and trails will be marked with pink "Roads and Trails Closed" signs.
According to Novak, riders have been very cooperative in the past. As a result, road maintenance costs have been considerably reduced through the years.
"We apologize for any inconvenience," said Novak. "We will be checking the roads and trails often and will re-open them after the frost is gone and they have had a chance to dry sufficiently."
A very limited number of motorized road use passes are available to land owners and spring trappers. Individuals must apply in person at the Park Rapids Area Forestry Office, 607 1st St West.
All roads and trails remain open to foot traffic. For more information, contact Park Rapids Area Forestry at (218) 732-3309.

Upcoming Events
1. ATV Fair & Swap Meet
2. Worlds Largest ATV Parade
3. 25th Annual Fall Convention
This year is ATVAM's 25th Anniversary. Please support ATVAM and Minnesota ATVing by participating in these events this year. ATVAM Volunteer Committee's and clubs have spent several months planning these events. They will be fun and it is a great opportunity to meet other ATVers who share your passion for ATVing.
1. ATV Fair and Swap Meet
May 3-4, 2008
Benton County Fair Grounds, Sauk Rapids MN (Near St Cloud)
Returning attractions are Quadmasters with their multiple challenge competitive event in the Grandstands (with beginner/stock thru open classes), an ATV Pull, and the test ride course where spectators can try out the newest ATV models, and Team Extreme R.C. truck racers.
This year there will be no fee for swapping (except the standard gate admission fee per person). We've also lowered the admission fee to $7 for adults and kids under 16 are free. There is also a discount coupon at www.atvfair.org.
For the convenience of our volunteers, we are adding a consignment (swapping) store. This will allow you, the volunteers, to offer items for sale but still be available to volunteer at the ATV Fair.
Our committee has been working hard to put together an event that will have a strong platform for growth and will ensure that ATVAM will be financially stable for years to come. However, we can only plan the event. In order for it to be successful we need flexible volunteers willing to help make things happen. Volunteers have participated in similar fundraising events for many years; including ATVAM conventions and helping ATVAM provide services at Hay Days. Last year over 200 volunteers pitched in to make the ATV Fair a success. WE HAVE MANY VOLUNTEER POSITIONS STILL AVAILABLE. If you can help at the ATV Fair and Swap meet please contact:

2. Worlds Largest ATV Parade
June 14, 2008
Silver Bay, MN
Spring is right around the corner, for most of us we're going out to the garage and dusting off our ATV and getting it ready for that first club ride
In 3 months we will be up in Silver Bay, MN breaking the World Record for the Longest ATVs in a Parade and they have opened their doors to us. Ample parking is available along the side roads near the staging area and on the city streets. You can ride your ATV on the trail to get to the staging area or you can park at the trail head in Beaver Bay and ride the trail into Silver Bay.
The parade route is a designated ATV trail for the day so kids can participate as long as they meet Minnesota state requirements for riding on trails. Details for youth riding can be found at www.findthetrails.com.
June 14, 2008 is Flag Day so let's be patriotic and have as many flags flying as we can. Right along with that thought let's be creative and see how many ways we can dress up our ATV for the parade.
Since this is ATVAM's 25th year maybe there are some vintage 3 wheelers and 4 wheelers out there that some of you have and would like to put on display for all of us to enjoy. If you are interested in displaying please contact Les Schermerhorn 218-233-1035 or email les-deb@cableone.net.
Zups in Silver Bay who are famous for their homemade sausages and beef jerky in the Northern tri-states are going to put on an all you can eat buffet for $10.00 a person at the Union Hall. Following that will be the famous ATVAM auction and to top off the evening Northern Lights band will be playing 50's 60's and early 70's music.
To help support Silver Bay's food bank we are asking everybody to bring can goods or staple item to the parade staging area to be donated to the local food bank.
Registration is $12.00 per ATV. Pre-register by May 9, 2008 and each registrant will receive one memorabilia ATV Parade T-shirt. www.atvparade.org.
Thank you for your support. See you in Silver Bay.

World's Longest ATV Parade
In 2008, the All-Terrain Vehicle Association of Minnesota
(ATVAM) will have reached a milestone by celebrating its
25th Anniversary and one of the events planned to mark this
accomplishment will take place June 14th in Silver Bay MN
as ATVAM attempts to break the record for the World's
Longest ATV Parade. Currently, Kentucky holds the record
at 1,138 ATV's in a parade.
The parade committee met with the City of Silver Bay, local
businesses and the Silver Trail Riders ATV club in October.
The committee was welcomed with open arms and the city of
Silver Bay is very excited that the parade will be held in
their community. Besides the fabulous ATV and Snowmobile
trail systems, it is a place that showcases the beauty that
Minnesota is known for all up and down the famous North
Shore Drive.
Since the announcement was made at the 2007 ATVAM Fall
Convention in September, resort and motel owners in the
area have stated that several ATV riders have already
booked rooms for the ATV parade so I encourage you to make
your reservations early. Here are a few of the motels and
resorts in the Silver Bay area: Wildhurst Lodge &
Campground 218-353-7337, Whispering Pines Motel
800-332-0531, and the AmericInn 877-254-1827. A full list
of motels and camp grounds in the area can be found at
www.atvparade.org or
www.atvparade.com.
To register for the parade, visit the two websites listed
above or www.atvam.org. The registration fee
is $12.00 per
ATV.
PRE-REGISTER BY MAY 9, 2008 AND RECEIVE ONE MEMORABILIA
T-SHIRT OF THE EVENT.
This event will also be a memorial for CJ Ramstad who was
the owner of MSPN and editor and publisher of Minnesota
Off-road. He and his son JJ died in an auto accident in
May 2007.
