Edge of The Wilderness
State and National Scenic Byway
The Edge of the Wilderness Scenic Byway is a 47 mile strech of curving, hilly roadway connecting Grand Rapids, Marcell, Bigfork, and Effie in Itasca County.
The route begins in Grand Rapids with meadows and lakes and then winds through mixed hardwoods and stands of connifers and aspen of The Chippewa National Forest. The curves and hills hide the breathtaking scenic views of lakes and forest land until the traveler is upon them. The northern section of the byway offers travelers the opportunity to travel through the glacial bed of lake Agassiz. During the fall color season, travelers are introduced to brilliant red sugar maples, glowing gold aspen and birch and the deep bronze of the oak trees.
Few roadways embrace the terrain and natural resources like the Edge of the Wilderness. The route truly represents Northern Minnesota with its unique and rich variety of landscapes, recreational opportunities, wildlife and rich heritage.
