Lewis and Clark Expedition Limited Eagle Feather.

This Eagle Feather depicts an event in the exploration of the western United States.  In 1803 with the Louisiana Purchase, the United States acquired the territory between the Mississippi River and the Pacific Ocean.  President Thomas Jefferson selected two former army officers, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, to led the expedition into this area.  The Lewis and Clark Expedition, Corps of Discovery, of 1804-1806 was the first American exploring party to investigate the vast territory.  They encountered many American Indian nations, mapped the difficult and tortuous country, and recorded the flora and fauna along the way.  With the help of a Shoshone Indian girl, Sacagawea, they were able to reach the Pacific Ocean in November 1805.  The following spring they returned, reaching St. Louis on September 1806.
