Cedar Canvas

About our cedar canvas canoes

All of our cedar canvas canoes are constructed of top grade cedar that we select ourselves. We use high quality air dried wood for our inwales, outwales and trim. The stem bands are brass and all fasteners that we use are brass, bronze or stainless steel. The white cedar ribs are steam bent over a 16 or 17 foot mold. After the ribs are completely dried, we fare them, then coat the backs of them with raw linseed oil before the planks are attached to the ribs with brass tacks. The planks are prevarnished before they go on the canoe so there is no raw wood to absorb water.

Great care is taken to shape the plank to insure a smooth hull. Before the canvas is put on the hull it is oiled to control water absorption and increase its flexibility. The #10 (#8 optional) cotton duck is filled with time tested oil base filler we make in our shop which is developed from a formula that dates from the early part of the century. The filler is hand rubbed into the canvas to completely fill the canvas and give a super smooth finish. There is a fungicide in the filler to help control rot and make the canvas last longer. The paint is also prepared in our shop to get maximum flexibility. Our standard colors are red, green and grey. The best grade of U.V. filter varnish is used on all exposed wood.

In ordering a wood canoe we require a $500.00 U.S. deposit, plus the full amount of any options. To produce the high quality that our customers expect, we will not rush our work, so please allow at least 8 to 12 weeks delivery if there are no canoes in stock.
