Cedar Strip

All wood strip canoes

North Bay has revived the form of strip construction that was used in canoe and small boat construction about 100 years ago. The system requires a high quality of craftsmanship to achieve a tight fit on all the planks to make it water tight. Narrow shiplap strips of cedar are fitted tightly together and secured to the ribs by brass tacks. Multiple layers of marine varnish add a beautiful clear finish. Also, a high grade of red cedar is used to achieve a consistent excellence. Because of the many hours required to produce such a high quality, this can never be a mass-produced item. Unlike the mass produced lower quality "strip canoes", these do not use a layer of fiberglass cloth to produce a watertight hull. We build the Tripper, Prospector 16' and 17' and Cruising canoes on our cedar canvas molds so the dimensions are the same. The weight on these canoes will be slightly less than the same model in cedar canvas.
