CANDY AND CARLOS

AUTHOR VALERIE READING CARLOS’ POEM

Transformation
By Valerie S. Field

En la kesh, A la ken.-- Mayan saying meaning You are the reflection of me, I am the reflection of you.

That smile, yes ? that one ?
spread wide and long across your face making everything else vanish
-
your rich brown child?s eyes
-
your solid black hair, a handful of strands generating static
-
all possible hurts I have, I had, I never had
now altered to joy as we are looking at each other.

No longer a candle,
you are a breath of life in perpetual motion
hands and feet in constant bustle,
- crawling swiftly under tables,
- standing upright, with the help of a chair,
- plastic cups clunking when tossed on the kitchen floor
- your little denim cap and books and small plastic balls that go whoosh
out of your favorite toy, all manner of things falling,
a constant game of fetch between you and any adult who happens to be
nearby.

You were 5 months living, born July fifth,
the thanksgiving of 2006 when your mothers journeyed to Guatemala City.

Like the three petals of rich violate on a Trinity Flower, the three
of you celebrated the birthday of a family. It did not feel real until
months later, after
-
crossing the final boarder
-
landing in Houston
-
passing through immigration
when, at last, the winds of change had shift.

Now your mothers are happily tired. They monitor as you
-
hold on to pinecones on strolls through the forest
-
imitate the quack of ducks as Cobweb, the Black Lab, swims in the marsh
-
sit on mom?s lap while she plays Heart & Soul on the piano
-
learn to clap, clap, clap and to wave and to sit
and finally, listen to Goodnight Moon or some other bedtime story, and
then quietly as a mouse (hopefully), fall to sleep.

Shhhh?

Welcome Carlos Louise Roberts-Salter,
you reflect the wisdom of youth for us all,
and transform Minnesota into the Land of Eternal Spring.
