August 9, 2010:  Polarized eyewear is extremely important to the avid angler.  So much can be learned visually, when searching for fish and fish-holding cover.  I’m excited to have recently partnered with Flying Fisherman sunglasses.  They offer a wide variety of models with glass and polycarbonate lenses and in different lense colors.  I’ll be using the Marquesa model in the Master Angler Series.  The AcuTint Sunlens System lenses elimitate glare . . . . and headaches from a long day on the water!  I will be rotating between two pairs, one with smoke lenses for bright conditions, and another with amber lenses for overcast conditions.  Flying Fisherman sunglasses are affordable too.  Check them out today at www.flyingfisherman.com

July 30, 2010:  I recently fished the Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship on Rainy Lake with my dad.  We made the money, placing 22nd in the 111 boat field.  We actually had a larger total weight than last year when we placed 9th.  I guess the bite was a little better this year.  Over the course of the three-day event, we caught several of our fish on Rapala topwater baits.  What a blast that is!  We also caught smallmouth on jig/plastic combinations.  The 1/16 oz Slurp Jig paired with a Mimic Minnow Fry or Slurpies Swim’n Grub is deadly on smallmouth.  Congrats to winners, Bill Wilcox and Dorian Lindholm.  They consistently brought daily catches of about 19 pounds to the scale.  That’s what it takes in a multi-day tournament. Al and Troy Lindner opened some eyes on Day 3 when they pulled three big largemouth from their basket.  Largemouth have been a “non-factor” on Rainy, showing up as individual fish, if at all.  Lindners put three in the boat in one day and have opened the door just slightly on a new frontier.  They are always on the “Edge”!  For coverage and complete results, to www.canadianbass.com

July 20, 2010:  I attended the ICAST show in Las Vegas with the crew from Northland Fishing Tackle.  It was exciting to be a part of Northland’s introduction of a 2011 products.  The LIVE-FORAGE series of lures is dynamite and was well received by buyers and media.  Using digital imaging technology, the LIVE-FORAGE lures look like real forage that fish eat.  These baits will be available for the coming ice-fishing season.  Better get some when they show up at your favorite bait-shop.  I was able to play around with them a little last winter and they are hot!  Also unveiled at ICAST was Northland’s new fishing line, BIONIC.  I’ve been field-testing this stuff for a year already and it is really nice.  Available in species-specific WALLEYE, BASS, and PANFISH varieties, as well as ICE line, it makes selecting the right line for the job pretty easy.  It’s also available in some odd sizes such as 5 lb. and 7 lb. test, which I’ve been using this season for walleyes.  Also, the ICE line really works well on the small diameter spinning reels.  It comes in AquaFlage, a blue camo that blends in with the ice and light backdrop as winter fish approach the bait from below.  To learn more, visit www.northlandtackle.com and read the press releases on these new products.  A bonus at ICAST was meeting several touring pros that were representing their sponsors at the show.  I was able to visit with KVD, Skeet, Ike, and many others.

July 15, 2010:  I just fished the Ron Schara MN Bound Invitational on Gull Lake near Brainerd, MN.  This event is unique in that anglers fish solo.  The two-day event, hosted by Cragun’s, attracts some of the best bass anglers in the state of  MN.  Congrats to Richie Boggs who won the tournament for the second time.  Richie guides on Gull and other Brainerd area lakes and knows where the bass hang out.    I had good practice and was pretty confident going into the event.  However, once the whistle blew, finding fish that would break the two-pound mark became difficult!  My brother, Craig did well, placing 5th.  Craig caught his fish on Northland Jungle Jigs adorned with Slurpies Jungle Craw Chunks.  A regurgitated rockbass in his live-well cost him 3rd place!  I did serve as boat captain for a youth event the day before the main event.  The two young anglers in my boat teamed up to place 2nd.  Good job guys.  It was fun fishing with you.  The MN Bound Invitational raises funds for the Minnesota Fishing Museum in Little Falls, MN.   Check out the museum if you are in that neck of the woods.  For more info on this event and to see complete results, go to www.mnboundinvitational.com
